Maeshowe Project November 2003 - February 2004
The Barnhouse Stone
The Barnhouse Stone is situated in a field off the main Kirkwall
to Stromness road, near the Stenness Kirk. It is said to be aligned
with Maeshowe and the midwinter setting sun and is also in a line
with the Watchstone, the centre of the Ring of Brodgar and the midwinter
sunrise. The stone is tightly surrounded by four strainer posts
and a fence which protect it but do not do much for its appearance
in the landscape. At least the grass around it is nice and long!
It is also covered with nice attractive lichen and moss.
